Salem Public Schools has a legacy of openness to innovation and student-driven practice. Emerging from the pandemic, civic and school leaders in Salem realized the urgency of increasing engagement and relevance for adolescent learners. A vision for a learner-centered and community-embedded experience took shape. The Middle School Learning Pilot launched in September 2022, with the support of Salem’s Civic leaders, School Committee, District leadership, Teachers’ Union, and Families.
While we certainly don’t have all the answers, we believe the insights gained from this year of learning are highly relevant to the work of building more equitable, learner-centered environments for communities across the North Shore and beyond.
